Connector descriptions can be confusing and ambiguous! In the descriptions I use the following which can describe most but not all connectors in an unambiguous manner.
Location: FIXED (Chassis mounted) FREE (Cable mounted)
Contacts: MALE (Pins or Blades) FEMALE (Recessed contacts)
Mechanical: PLUG (Protruding) RECEPTACLE (Recess)
